Sit down with Salma Nadim, Content Marketing Manager
Hear from Codat’s Content Marketing Manager, Salma, on what attracted her to Codat and the evolution of her role.
Why did you get into a career in Marketing?
I think I’ve always wanted to work in Marketing. I’ve had a keen interest in storytelling and writing for as long as I can remember. I also love the challenge of breaking down complex ideas into a consumable and impactful message, so a career in Marketing just made sense.
Why did you decide to join Codat?
If you’d told me a few years ago that I would end up working for a business that offered a universal API for small business data, I would’ve been stunned. If I’m being completely honest, I didn’t even know what an API was a few years ago. But, I was really attracted to the company’s mission and the idea of solving a genuine problem for small businesses. It also seemed like an excellent opportunity to push myself outside of my comfort zone.
I was very impressed by the rate of growth, the company culture, and the knowledgeable people I spoke to as part of my interview process. That experience made the decision to join Codat an easy one. Since then, the many opportunities I’ve had to develop new skills and take on additional responsibility have reaffirmed that I made the right call.
What attracted you to the Content Marketing role in particular?
When I joined Codat almost two years ago, I was one of just two people in Marketing. I was particularly excited by the prospect of becoming a founding member of the team and having the ability to shape our brand positioning and voice from early on.
Having previously held more generalist marketing roles, I was also looking for an opportunity to spend more time on content creation, so this role seemed like the perfect fit.
What have been the main challenges for you while at Codat?
My biggest challenge was definitely getting to grips with our ever-growing list of use cases – I’m still learning so much almost two years on. In my opinion, one of the great things about our solution is its versatility. But, that does mean that our content has to speak to many different personas across different verticals and use cases about different problems. Producing quality content that resonates with these audiences can be challenging, but it’s something that I really enjoy.
How has your role changed or evolved since joining?
While content has always been my main focus, my role has varied a fair amount in the time I’ve been at Codat. Starting out as a team of two meant getting stuck in wherever the business needed marketing support. Getting involved in everything from our PPC strategy to briefing the leadership team for speaking engagements was a great way to learn new skills.
For example, I’ve recently had the opportunity to get involved in our PR and Comms strategy for our expansion into Australia and New Zealand, something that I’ve really enjoyed.
What are you most proud of in your role so far?
Probably having my work featured in a couple of the publications I read daily. It was a bit of a pinch-me a moment. I’d also have to say watching our social media following increase by over 220% in the last two years.
What would you say to someone thinking about joining Codat?
It’s an incredibly exciting time to join Codat as we continue to expand rapidly! We have several open roles in the marketing team in particular. The team is made up of passionate, collaborative, and fun individuals who are truly excellent at their jobs. Come and join us!
What are you looking forward to most over the next year?
It’s hard to narrow it down to just a few things. I’m looking forward to continuing to grow our following on social media and producing helpful and engaging content. I’m also pretty excited about getting the opportunity to spend more time with the team based out in New York and Sydney.
What is your favourite podcast or book that you have been hooked on lately?
I listen to far too many podcasts. My top picks are:
- Today in Focus – it’s great for staying up to date with the headlines.
- You’re Wrong About – really interesting revaluations of cultural events.
- Off Menu – for something a little more light-hearted.
In terms of books, Talking to strangers by Malcolm Gladwell is probably one of my favourite recent reads.
